Inside Our Magnesium Balms & Salts
For all of our products, we work with ingredients that are as close to their original form as possible. Oils and plant butters that are raw, organic, and unrefined maintain more of their antioxidants and natural anti-microbial properties than those that are refined with high heat. We are also extremely careful to only use ingredients that are never tested on animals and are as ethical and sustainable as possible when it comes to quality, sourcing, and the environment as well as human rights and labor practices. We have done a LOT of reading and research about the companies from which we source our ingredients, and are continually working to learn more and always make changes whenever we find out about more sustainable options!
Genuine Zechstein Magnesium Oil and Flakes
[Magnesium Chloride]
Magnesium has been used transdermally by human beings for thousands of years. Civilizations have long sought out places like the Dead Sea and mineral hot springs for healing. The magnesium we use in our products is magnesium chloride, a mineral salt “oil” that comes from the ancient Zechstein seabed in Europe. This vast underground source contains enough magnesium for everyone on earth to use it for hundreds of years! And rather than reconstituting magnesium flakes to make the oil we use in our balms, we use ultra pure therapeutic grade magnesium oil that comes in its original liquid form. (The flakes are used for our salt soaks) Magnesium chloride that is used on your skin is a very bioavailable form that gets to your cells quickly. Using magnesium on your skin also bypasses your digestive system so you can absorb more magnesium without the undesired digestive side effects that often come with high doses of oral magnesium.
Coconut Oil
[Cocos Nucifera]
This certified organic, non-GMO, virgin, cold-pressed and unrefined coconut oil has a light coconut scent and provides wonderful moisturizing qualities.
Shea Butter
[Butyrospermum Parkii]
This certified organic raw shea butter from Ghana has no additives and is not bleached or altered. It is sourced from a company that empowers women to earn a sustainable living and invest in their own communities. It is also Greener Life Certified, meaning that is carbon neutral; cruelty-free with no impact on animal habitat; skin safe, organic, and non-GMO; and 100% fair trade with respect for indigenous land rights. It is a thick, creamy yellow unrefined butter with a slightly nutty scent that locks in moisture.
Cocoa Butter
[Theobroma Cacao]
This raw unrefined cocoa butter is certified organic and comes from the fruit of the cacao tree. It contains no additives. It is solid at room temperature, is a creamy light tan color, and has the scent of cocoa.
Sunflower Oil
[Helianthus Annuus]
This certified organic and non-GMO high oleic sunflower oil is free from hexane (a chemical solvent sometimes used for extraction) and expeller-pressed from sunflower seeds hand-picked in Spain.
Candelilla Wax
[Euphorbia Antisyphilitica]
This natural plant-sourced light yellow wax is a vegan alternative to beeswax and comes from the leaves of the candelilla plant, a shrub that grows in dry climates.
Tapioca Flour
[Manihot Esculenta]
Because magnesium is an electrolyte that is notoriously difficult to bind with other ingredients in formulations, we use this certified organic and non-GMO tapioca flour as a binder and thickener instead of chemical emulsifiers and other additives. Tapioca flour comes from cassava root.
Vitamin E Oil
[Helianthus Annuus]
A natural preservative, our vitamin E oil is certified organic, non-GMO, and sourced from sunflower seeds.
CBD
[Cannabidiol from Cannabis Sativa]
The CBD that we include in our products is full spectrum (instead of CBD isolate), which means that multiple whole-plant constituents are working together for greater benefit. Our CBD is ethanol extracted from hemp grown right here in Western New York and infused into the coconut oil we use to make our balms!
Jojoba Oil
[Simmondsia chinensis]
The jojoba seed oil we work with is certified organic, non-GMO, cold-pressed, hexane-free, and unrefined. Jojoba oil is a wonderful moisturizer that is similar to the oils our skin naturally produces.
Epsom Salt
[Magnesium Sulfate]
Used in our salt soaks, Epsom salt is USP (pharmaceutical) grade magnesium sulfate, which is not classified as organic because of its category but is in fact a naturally occurring salt.
Baking Soda
[Sodium Bicarbonate]
Used in our salt soaks, this non-GMO sodium bicarbonate is good for the skin. Unlike some other well known brands of baking soda, the one we use is not tested on animals!
Essential Oils and Herbs
We use only 100% pure therapeutic grade essential oils that are either wildcrafted or organic, steam distilled or cold pressed, and 3rd party tested. The dried herbs we use are all certified organic. Both the essential oils and the herbs we use are sourced from companies that are committed to environmental sustainability. This means that rather than participating in overharvesting, they simply don't offer certain oils and herbs when they are not available using ethical and sustainable practices.
